What on Earth in the iSPORT Challenge?

How'd I go from this...
(sorry for the blurry picture)

To this???

Welcome to the iSPORT challenge. The purpose of this post is really just to explain what this blog is all about. First off, although it is written as though I am writing to someone, I am really not presuming that someone or anyone at all is even reading this. This blog is for me... if you want to come along AWESOME, cause its going to be nothing but fun.

Now moving on to the purpose of adding one more of these crazy blogs to the billions that already exist. My passion in life is sports. I love 'em and can't get enough of them. I grew up playing all kinds of sports and I continued that endeavor through to my high school graduation. I never played for glory or money (although I did want to continue on to play college football), but I always loved playing whatever sport I was in.

After graduation came responsibility. No college scholarship coupled with new "living on my own" expenses, tuition, a job, and preparing for an LDS mission led me to believe that I had to "grow up" and move on from the sports I loved. I did that although I still played a little (intramural football and basketball mainly). After two years in Russia, I returned to college and more "real life". My passion for sport (especially football) never dwindled, but my ability to commit time and effort into pursuing it seemed frivolous.

Then along came the most wonderful personal to ever influence my life--my wife Julie. We got married in Spring 2006 and things have only gotten better since. Now with one son, Mason, our lives are rarely dull and always fun. But the passion for sport still burns.

Right after our marriage, I dabbled in city leagues and intramurals and decided to make one last stab at the big show... walking on to a division 1 football program. I trained for about 4 weeks and found it to be much tougher than I remembered. Julie would get up early with me and time me in the 40 and pro-agility drills as the tryout date neared. Then two weeks before the date, fate/not enough preparation/ stupidity stepped in. On a cold late summer night, I was playing in a city league softball game with my brothers. During the 3rd inning I came up to bat with a man on 1st. The pitch came in low and in my haste I swung causing the ball to ground down the 3rd base line at a pathetic speed. Watching the ball as I headed toward 1st base, I knew that unless I picked up some speed I would be thrown out for sure. As I tried to dig in and get to the next gear my hamstring informed me that I hadn't stretched before the game and it wasn't very happy with me. It decided to tear on me causing me to stumble past first base and onto my face in the foul territory grass. At that point, I knew there was no way I was making it to tryouts in two weeks.

Since that time my involvement in sport has been even less. I moved away from my family and now can't find enough guys to put together any type of city league team. I was persuaded by my ever wonderful wife to train for and run a half marathon. Although my performance was less than admirable, I was happy for the experience.

Now for the epiphany and the reason for this blog. In my development from in shape to out of shape to back in to out, I have realized that I am not very good at just "working out". I have a hard time finding the drive and determination to stick with it and I realized why. I love Sport. I love to play and compete in various games and events. Although football is my favorite, I love to participate in all kinds of sports and I have aspirations to do a lot of things. Therefore comes the blog.

This blog will track my adventures as I endeavor to do things I am "no longer suppose to do". We'll cover training, gear and equipment, associating with the right people, tryouts/events, interviews, strategy, and much much more.

So stay tuned and come back often...
